A borrowed property- Earth

Earth came into existence 4.54 billion years ago. It is the only planet that is known so far to completely sustain life.  The resources it provides makes it possible for lifeforms to exist.  Earth has a balanced environment with proper air, water, temperature, sunlight, and food.  We cannot imagine our life without the resources it provides. When earth was formed, and started sustaining life , nobody thought we would come to a point where the life forms would collapse within few decades.

As the humans advanced and made themselves as superior beings, and masters of the planet, the earth now has come to a point where it is devastated. We now may no longer call it a life-sustaining planet, or the blue planet as it has 70 percent of its surface as water, and now it has no longer remained a life-giving planet but a human manufactured planet, nor a blue planet because the water content is decreasing. The human population is increasing day by day, and with increasing population resources are decreasing and so are the other life forms, like flora and fauna. A recent study has revealed that within three to four decades the human population would collapse, as the pollution, deforestation, global warming is increasing, land areas are decreasing and earth would no longer be able to lift up the loads of the increasing population and meet their demands.

There’s a famous quote by Lester brown, ” we have not inherited this earth from our forefathers, we have borrowed it from our future generation. “ It is true, and we have to return them the land with all its comforts and facilities which we once fully exploited. But we have exploited the resources up to such an extent that we no longer would be able to offer our children with anything. We have  to say our future generation sorry, for not giving them clean green earth.

Sorry, for not giving them pure air to breathe.

Sorry, for not providing them with a single meal of the day.

Sorry, for not giving them clean water to drink.

And I guess in times to  come we have to say our future generation sorry, for not giving them birth.

Its need of the hour, that we should see our planet before our profit, our greed, and our selfishness. We have to stop exploiting every resource we find. We should stop the reckless cutting of trees, over usage of fossil fuels, driving vehicles, even for shorter distances and causing pollution. We have to realize if the resources once depleted, they are beyond repair. The earth took more than a billion years to form what it is giving us now and if we deplete it continuously, there will no longer be any life that could flourish for a billion decades.

Big protests, campaign are not required, we can be the change we want to see by making a small effort at our levels, like not using plastic and burning it, for shorter distances we can walk or use cycles rather cars or scooters, or we can share a single car or use public transport for longer distances rather using a car for each person alone. They say small efforts once made, leads to bigger changes.  Afforestation, every time we can, that would control global warming. And stopping others for any kind of exploitation of resources they do and educating people in a way that they know the importance of the earth and its resources.

Earth has given us immense pleasures and protecting it and saving it is a way we can pay its price.

What first comes in your mind when you hear or see the word ‘road’, a path, or a way to cover or reach a certain place?
Well, it is more than that. A road or path is important in everyone’s life.
Like for instance, you gotta first travel the road of a failure to reach the road of success,
You need to see the road of evil before finding the road of God.
Moreover, you have to travel the road of death to travel the road to life.
And some roads lead you to a never-ending journey or I suppose, to a place from where there’s no coming back. Some paths tell stories these paths may be the most or less traveled; and you see the road less traveled give you unending adventures, and you never know might be those roads were the once most traveled.

Here’s a story for you all to read and ponder. It tells you,

“It’s a godly way of selection, the wise shall pass and rise, the insatiable ought to be dammed. No forgiveness given, no apology accepted.”

Well, have you ever wondered what things are made up of before you actually consume or buy it? However, many of us do not pay much attention to the ingredients. However, I feel to pay attention to what you are having are some basic rules you should follow. Did you ever wonder what capsules are? What are they made up of?

Capsules are encapsulated medicines that refer to the range of dosage form. (Dosage form is just the pharmaceutical drug product in the form that can be marketed for use, with specific active and inactive components. For example, one range of dose of same medicine is 500mg capsule and other form is 250mg tablet). Generally, capsules are manufactured when drugs cannot be compacted in usual tablet form. When drugs cannot be absorbed in the body in normal tablet form and are required to be mixed with oil and other liquids for the aid of proper absorption- capsule are useful.

So, what is the manufacturing material of capsules?

Well, there types one is the – Gelatin capsules informally called gel caps, are composed of gelatin manufactured from collagen (is the structural protein of extracellular matrix and various connective tissues).

The other form is vegetable capsules- made up of plant polysaccharides (polymers of monosaccharide) or their derivatives like carrageenans (sulfated polysaccharides extracted from edible seaweeds. Often used in food industry- as gelling agent, thickening and stabilizing agent) and modified forms of starch and cellulose.  To be more specific, the main ingredient of vegetarian capsule is hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC, is an inert, semi synthetic, viscoelastic polymer).

In addition other ingredients are also added to gelling agent solution and that includes plasticizers (solvent added to synthetic resins (highly viscous substances) to make it more soft and flexible) like glycerin or sorbitol (sugar alcohol) to decrease capsule’s hardness, coloring agents, preservatives, disintegrates, lubricants and surface treatment.

Ever wondered what capsules contain? How they are sealed? What are the types of encapsulation?

Generally, there are two types of encapsulation

  1. Single-piece gel encapsulation (also known as “soft capsules”):

Soft gels are effective for oral drug intake, especially when they are poorly soluble. This is because the fill can contain liquid ingredients that help increase solubility or permeability of the drug across the membranes in the body. Liquid ingredients are difficult to include in any other solid dosage form such as a tablet. Soft gels are also highly suited to potent drugs (for example, where the dose is <100 µg).

At first the single piece gel capsules were first prepared by Mothes and Dublanc in 1833, filled with a drop of gelatin. They used iron molds to construct it. Later on, R. P. Scherer discovered a Blow molding method in 1933. (Blow molding method is a manufacturing process for forming and joining two hollow plastic parts as one). In further advancements, in the year 1949 ‘Accogel’ process was discovered in America, which could accurately fill powder drugs in the soft shells.

  • Two-piece gel encapsulation (also known as “hard capsules”):

It consists of two pieces, a cap and a body. They are made of gelatin by placing metal mold pins onto the gelling solution, films form on the mould surfaces, are dried, cut to length and two parts assembled, the two halves are separated, the capsule is filled with powder or more normally pellets into one half and the other half in pressed on. However, before filling the drug it is weighed and then added. Capsules are then made dust free and stored in a room with optimal conditions (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrZgRCWH3No)

There is a new class of encapsulation i.e. – Drug- Embedded empty capsule shells: A new class of capsules has been developed where drugs can be embedded in the capsule shell matrix. This allows different drugs to be delivered using the same capsule.

The process of encapsulation of hard gelatin capsules can be done on manual, semi-automatic and automatic capsule filling machines Where as Soft gels are filled at the same time as they are produced and sealed on the rotary die of a fully automatic machine. Capsule fill weight is a critical attribute in encapsulation and various real time fill weight monitoring techniques such as near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) etc are used.

So, now you can distinguish and are well aware of what kind of capsules you are consuming.
